August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and so today we look at the history of the Immaculate Heart. What does devotion to the Immaculate Heart mean and how might we incorporate this devotion into our everyday spirituality? I'll offer some suggestions.

EXALTATION OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY by Pius XII
Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, in this tragic hour of the world's history, we entrust and consecrate ourselves to your Immaculate Heart, our only refuge, our hope, our salvation. Have pity on this world, torn by the most terrible conflicts, burning with the fires of hate, victim of its own sins. May your Heart be moved at the sight of so much ruin, pain and sorrow.

We consecrate to your maternal heart our persons, our families, our country--the whole of humanity. Protect and save us!

O Heart of Mary, source of true love, fill our selfish hearts with divine charity and with that true brotherly love without which there can never be peace. Grant that men and nations may understand and fulfill the precept of your Divine Son to love one another, in order that true peace may be firmly established in the Justice and Truth of Christ.

Join with Catholic:Under The Hood in another meditation upon the icons of the Eastern Church by looking at the icon of the Resurrection. This icon is based upon the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus and is sometimes called the Harrowing of Hell because it relates Christ descent among the dead to free the souls of those who died before his resurrection.

Today we celebrate Christ's victory over death and, in turn, our own libertation from the forces of death and darkness. Christ died for the sake of the world and in him the whole world is reborn.

In preparation for the upcoming time of Lent in the Catholic Church, let us meditate upon the Icon of the Awesome Judgment of God. This is one of the more complicated icons we have looked at with images both of the general and particular judgements present in Matthew 25 and Revelation 20.

This Lenten time is valuable both for moving away from those things which seek to distract our attention from God and moving toward those things which guide us into greater love for our neighbor. Reflecting upon the many messages contained in this icon can be useful in accomplishing both of those goals.
